The Yonkers Family YMCA Reach & RiseTM Therapeutic Mentoring Program targets youth ages 10-16. The target population is youngsters that may be failing in current mentoring programs, because the challenges they were up against made it difficult for non-therapeutic mentors to know how to appropriately support youth and families. Or maybe the child has never been in a mentorship program at all, but may be at-risk for problems such as chronic absenteeism, gang-involvement and/or other anti-social behaviors that would restrict them from living happy and productive lives now and in the future.
Mentors (ages +23) and youth “mentees” are “matched” 1-to-1 for a minimum of one year (with an option to continue after the first year) and expected to meet weekly for an average of 1-3 hours. Potential mentors will receive a total of 15 training hours before they are matched up with a mentee. Background checks are conducted on all mentors as per the requirements of the YMCA and the program, before they are matched up with the mentees.
